Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during Xbox events marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, announcements of games coming to competing platforms like PlayStation 5 were often made separately, or even after the Xbox showcase. This is a clear departure from the practices of Sony and Nintendo, who continue to focus primarily on their own consoles in their marketing efforts.
The change is evident in comparing Microsoft's June 2024 showcase, which omitted PS5 logos for several titles, to later showcases where PS5 logos were prominently featured. This difference highlights Microsoft's evolving approach.
In an interview, Xbox head Phil Spencer explained the rationale behind this change. He emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that showcasing games on all available platforms—including PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch—is crucial for reaching a wider audience. While acknowledging that not all platforms offer the same capabilities, Spencer prioritized making games accessible to as many players as possible. He believes this strategy allows Microsoft to create larger games while still supporting its native Xbox platform.
This new transparency means we can anticipate seeing more PS5 and potentially Nintendo Switch 2 logos in future Xbox showcases. Future events, such as the anticipated June 2025 showcase, might feature titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty with PS5 branding alongside Xbox. However, it's unlikely that Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach. They will likely continue to maintain their focus on their respective console ecosystems.
