One of the co-founders of Subnautica 2 studio Unknown Worlds has shared his perspective on last week's unexpected leadership transition, admitting the sudden change "stings."
In an emotional Reddit post, Charlie Cleveland explained that while he and his team believed Subnautica 2 was "ready for early release," ultimate authority now lies with Krafton. This revelation follows the publisher's recent statement indicating no imminent launch, with details about Early Access timing promised "coming soon."
The apparent disconnect suggests tensions between Krafton and Unknown Worlds' original leadership.
Krafton's statement also sought to reassure fans regarding game monetization: "The core experience remains unchanged - a single-player focused adventure with optional co-op multiplayer. No subscriptions, loot boxes, battle passes, or microtransactions will be implemented."
Following Krafton's acquisition of Unknown Worlds in October 2021, the studio maintained independent operations - until last week's abrupt restructuring. Former Striking Distance CEO Steve Papoutsis now leads Unknown Worlds as CEO, replacing founding members Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, and Max McGuire "effective immediately."
Cleveland refrained from detailing circumstances behind the transition or Papoutsis' appointment.
"For Max, Ted, myself, the Unknown Worlds team, and our community, these developments came as a complete surprise," Cleveland wrote on Reddit. "We firmly believe the game is ready for Early Access, but that decision now rests with Krafton. After decades of dedication, being removed from the company I founded is deeply painful."
"Whatever changes occur with leadership or development, our guiding principle remains creating exceptional experiences for our incredible community. Through Gorge plushies, fan artwork, and your unwavering support - dating back to our Half-Life modding days - you've inspired us through every challenge and triumph."
