Freedom to Hunt the Yotei Six

In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new details about Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. This PlayStation exclusive aims to enhance its predecessor's gameplay and narrative depth.

Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted the game's unparalleled freedom in gameplay and its expansive maps, the largest ever crafted by the studio. Cornell emphasized that players will have the autonomy to locate the Yotei Six and choose their path to avenge them, rather than following a linear storyline.

Following last week's announcement of the PS5 release date, a new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List" introduced fans to protagonist Atsu and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.

More Melee Weapons

Ghost of Yotei not only expands exploration freedom but also diversifies weapon choices. Following speculation from the latest trailer, Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed that alongside the traditional samurai sword, players can wield the odachi, a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.

Fox stressed the samurai sword's pivotal role but noted that players can learn to use other weapons from various masters encountered throughout the story and open world.

Unlike its predecessor, where samurai honor was central, Atsu's non-samurai status frees her from such constraints, allowing her to utilize any available weapons creatively, such as picking up and throwing enemy-dropped weapons. Fox clarified, "However, it is limited to some weapons. It's not like every enemy or weapon is targeted, but if you can handle it, you're going to treat it."

Ezo as the Setting

Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei captures a "stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature," according to Cornell.

The game also features the Ainu culture, indigenous to Japan's northern regions. Sucker Punch's team visited Hokkaido for extensive research, consulting with experts and visiting museums to authentically represent Ainu culture. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning and nature-rich landscapes, which they aim to showcase in the game.

Ghost of Tsushima set a high bar for cultural depiction, earning praise from Japanese critics. Sucker Punch aims to maintain this standard in Ghost of Yotei, highlighting the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."

Ghost of Yōtei is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage on this highly anticipated title!
