Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by significant server issues, bugs, and instability. Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed player concerns in a YouTube video.
Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers
Neumann and Wloch explained that while they anticipated high player interest, the actual volume significantly exceeded their projections, overwhelming their server infrastructure. The initial login process involves retrieving data from a database, which, despite being tested with 200,000 simulated users, proved insufficient for the actual player count.
Login Queues and Missing Content
Attempts to mitigate the problem by increasing queue capacity and speed initially showed promise but ultimately failed due to database cache overload. This resulted in extended loading times, often stalling at 97% completion. Additionally, reports of missing aircraft and other game content stemmed from this server-side data failure.
Negative Steam Feedback
The launch issues have resulted in largely negative player reviews on Steam, citing long login queues and missing game assets. Despite the setbacks, the development team assures players that they are actively working to resolve these issues and have implemented solutions to stabilize player access. A statement on the Steam page apologizes for the inconvenience and promises continued updates.
