Diablo 4 has unveiled Season 8, ushering in a wave of free updates paving the way for the action RPG’s second expansion, slated for release in 2026.
However, tension brews within Diablo 4’s dedicated community. Passionate players, eager for bold new features, reworks, and innovative gameplay in the nearly two-year-old title, have been vocal about their expectations. While casual players enjoy slaying monsters without diving deep into mechanics, the game’s core fanbase—veteran players who obsess over meta builds and play consistently—demands more from Blizzard to keep their engagement alive.
It’s no shock, then, that Blizzard’s 2025 roadmap for Diablo 4, the first of its kind, sparked criticism. Following its release, fans voiced concerns about the upcoming content, including Season 8, questioning whether it offers enough to sustain their interest through 2025.

The online debate grew heated, prompting a Diablo community manager to jump into the primary discussion thread on the Diablo 4 subreddit to address concerns: “We kept details light for later roadmap sections to allow for ongoing work,” they clarified. “There’s more in store for 2025!” Even Mike Ybarra, former Blizzard Entertainment president and a key figure at Microsoft, its parent company, chimed in with pointed remarks.
Season 8 arrives amid this backdrop, introducing polarizing changes. A major overhaul aligns Diablo 4’s battle pass with Call of Duty’s, enabling non-linear item unlocks. However, the revised pass yields less virtual currency, reducing what players can spend on future passes.
In an in-depth IGN interview, Diablo 4 lead live game designer Colin Finer and lead seasons designer Deric Nunez address the roadmap backlash, confirm long-awaited skill tree updates, and clarify the battle pass adjustments.
