Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, has publicly expressed his strong interest in developing a game based on Microsoft's Shadowrun IP. This revelation follows an interview where he was asked about his preferred non-Fallout Microsoft franchise to helm. While currently occupied with titles like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Urquhart clearly stated his preference for Shadowrun, calling it "super cool" and confirming it as his top choice from a list of Microsoft IPs he reviewed post-acquisition.

This isn't a surprising declaration from a studio known for its expertise in crafting compelling RPG sequels. Obsidian's history, from Fallout: New Vegas to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, showcases a talent for expanding existing worlds and narratives. Urquhart himself has previously articulated the studio's preference for sequels, emphasizing the inherent expandability of RPG universes. His long-standing personal fandom of the Shadowrun tabletop RPG further underscores his enthusiasm for the project.

The Shadowrun franchise, initially a tabletop RPG launched in 1989, boasts a rich history of video game adaptations. While Harebrained Schemes has contributed several recent entries, a significant gap exists since the release of the last standalone game, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, in 2015. Although remastered versions arrived in 2022, the fanbase eagerly anticipates a new, original Shadowrun title. The rights, initially under FASA Corporation, transitioned to Microsoft following the acquisition of FASA Interactive in 1999. Should Obsidian secure the license, the future of Shadowrun would be in the capable hands of a studio with a proven track record in delivering high-quality RPG experiences. The potential for a revitalized Shadowrun game under Obsidian's direction has generated significant excitement among fans.
