Spanish developer MercurySteam, acclaimed for titles like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Metroid Dread, has officially announced their latest project—a dark fantasy action-RPG called Blades of Fire. Co-developed with publisher 505 Games, the title promises to plunge players into a richly detailed world teeming with enigmatic races and formidable creatures.
The debut trailer highlights fluid hack-and-slash combat mechanics, a distinctive art style, and a brooding fantasy setting. Gameplay-wise, Blades of Fire carries echoes of Lords of Shadow, while its environments and enemy design bear noticeable inspiration from the Darksiders series. Notably, the footage reveals a mechanical bird companion that will likely serve as a traversal mechanic.
The game runs on MercurySteam’s bespoke Mercury Engine, which could potentially sidestep the performance hurdles frequently faced by Unreal Engine 5-powered projects.
Blades of Fire launches on May 22, 2025, for current-gen consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) and PC, exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
