Spectre Divide Backlash Prompts Skin Prices to Lower Soon After Launch

Responding to player criticism, Spectre Divide developer Mountaintop Studios swiftly adjusted in-game skin and bundle pricing just hours after the online FPS title's launch. This article details the studio's announcement and the player reaction.

30% SP Refund for Early Buyers

Mountaintop Studios announced significant price reductions for in-game weapons and character skins, addressing widespread negative feedback regarding initial pricing. Game director Lee Horn confirmed a 17-25% price decrease across items. This decision followed immediate backlash after release.

"We've heard your feedback and are taking action," the studio stated, promising a permanent 17-25% price reduction on weapons and outfits. A 30% SP (in-game currency) refund will be issued to players who purchased items before the price adjustment. This compensation aims to address concerns about the high cost of skins and bundles, such as the Cryo Kinesis Masterpiece bundle, originally priced at approximately $85 (9,000 SP).

The refund, rounded up to the nearest 100 SP, applies to all pre-reduction purchases. However, the studio clarified that prices for Starter packs, Sponsorships, and Endorsement upgrades remain unchanged. Players who bought the Founder's or Supporter packs and these additional items will receive the extra SP added to their accounts.

Player reaction to the price reduction remains mixed, mirroring the game's currently "Mixed" Steam rating (49% Negative at the time of writing). Negative reviews flooded Steam following the launch, primarily due to the initially high cost of in-game items. While some players appreciated the response, others expressed continued dissatisfaction. One Twitter (X) user commented, "Not quite enough, but it's a start! Glad you're listening to feedback." Another suggested allowing individual item purchases from bundles.

Conversely, some players remain skeptical, questioning the timing of the price adjustment. One user criticized the reactive approach, stating, "This should have been done beforehand, not after the backlash. This trend could jeopardize the game's long-term success, especially with future F2P competition."
