Tech analysts report that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is experiencing notable performance issues on all consoles, leaving fans eager for an essential update.

Oblivion Remastered has seen a tremendously successful launch, attracting over 4 million players and earning a 'Very Positive' user review score on Steam. Still, performance concerns remain the most frequently mentioned drawback.

Digital Foundry conducted a comprehensive technical review of Oblivion Remastered across all console platforms and discovered substantial performance problems in every version. DF's Thomas Morgan commented on Virtuos's Unreal Engine 5 remake:

No platform is spared of issues: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro, or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there's major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I've also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time - quite possibly down to a memory leak. And finally, software freezes are the icing on the cake, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing to the system menu on loading a save one too many times.

How does this affect actual gameplay? According to DF, a "charged" play session with more continuous gameplay runs worse than a fresh start. Cycling through multiple saves also introduces glitches in longer sessions, Morgan noted. Interestingly, this can also cause the camera to sit too high while on horseback—a problem fixed by restarting the game.

The finding that performance degrades over time, possibly due to a memory leak, is especially worrying. Frequent crashes when loading saves also pose a significant disruption.

Players are hopeful that Bethesda will fix these problems sooner rather than later, especially as they invest more time in the expansive fantasy RPG and become more likely to encounter these technical troubles.

“It's a dire position for any remaster to be in and developer Virtuos needs to address the game's stability - the crashes - as a priority,” Morgan continued.

Digital Foundry raised difficult questions in its evaluation, implying that Oblivion Remastered may have been "rushed to market." There also appears to be inconsistency between platforms: a hotfix released for Xbox Series X is still not available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.

That’s a harsh critique of the console version, but what about PC? DF had already evaluated the PC release, describing its performance as "dire." Their full analysis offers further insight.

Performance issues aside, Oblivion Remastered has been a commercial triumph. It became the third best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S. after its surprise release on April 22, trailing only Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.

Oblivion Remastered, developed by remake specialist Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, offers numerous visual and gameplay refinements. It runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second as expected, but many improvements go much deeper. Enhancements span leveling mechanics, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, players will find expanded dialogue, a fully realized third-person view, and new lip-sync technology. These updates have won over many fans—some of whom even argue that the game should be considered a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified why it chose the remaster approach.

Now that the game is widely available, veteran Oblivion Remastered players are advising newcomers to complete the Kvatch quest early, before level scaling turns it into a major challenge. There's also buzz about one explorer who managed to leave Cyrodiil and venture into Valenwood, Skyrim, and even Hammerfell—the rumored location of The Elder Scrolls VI.
