The director of Avowed has hinted at exciting plans for the franchise following the game's successful launch. Dive into the details to discover more about potential expansions, sequels, and other projects on the horizon.
Avowed's impressive sales have left both Microsoft and Obsidian delighted. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the prospects of expanding the game through DLCs or sequels.
While Obsidian has yet to announce specific plans, Patel expressed her eagerness to continue working on the franchise. "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," she remarked, indicating a strong interest in future developments.
The journey to Avowed's release was filled with challenges and pivotal changes. Patel candidly shared that the development process was tumultuous but ultimately rewarding.
Starting in 2018, Obsidian faced the complexities of maintaining independence while eyeing potential acquisition. Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 marked a significant shift, leading to the official announcement of Avowed. However, the development team had to make tough decisions, including dropping multiplayer features and other functionalities. A leadership change in January 2021 prompted a reboot of the project.
Under Patel's leadership, the team navigated the complexities of managing over 80 people in production. She emphasized the importance of focusing on the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and opting for open zones instead of a fully open world, which enhanced the game's environments.
Reflecting on the development process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
With Avowed reigniting interest in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is exploring new avenues, including a tactics game. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, the director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, shared the studio's enthusiasm for a tactics game within the franchise.
Sawyer stated, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size and visual quality.
Despite the interest in a tactics game, Sawyer remains committed to the idea of developing Pillars of Eternity 3, but with a significantly larger budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which stands at $100 million.
