Assassin’s Creed Shadows has welcomed over 3 million players since its launch, according to an official statement from Ubisoft.

This impressive milestone was reached just seven days after the game officially released on May 20. It marks a significant increase from the 2 million players reported as early as day two, surpassing the initial player numbers of both Origins and Odyssey.

Additional performance metrics shared by Ubisoft were initially highlighted in an internal email covered by IGN, which provided context around the game’s opening weekend. The report noted that Shadows’ performance outperformed both Origins and Odyssey, though it fell short of the “perfect storm” conditions surrounding the release of Valhalla in 2020.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows also achieved the second-highest day one sales revenue in franchise history—only trailing behind Valhalla, which remains Ubisoft’s most successful PlayStation Store launch to date. To date, players have collectively logged more than 40 million hours in the game.

The success of [Assassin's Creed Shadows] is critical for Ubisoft globally, especially following multiple delays and the underwhelming performance of last year’s [Star Wars Outlaws]. In fact, Ubisoft has faced a string of challenges leading up to this release, including several [high-profile flops], [layoffs], [studio closures], and [game cancellations].

The situation at Ubisoft became so dire that the founding Guillemot family reportedly engaged in discussions with Chinese tech giant Tencent and other potential investors about a possible buyout. The goal of such a deal would be to retain control over the company’s valuable intellectual property. As a result, the global gaming community is closely monitoring the early performance of Assassin’s Creed Shadows for signs of recovery—or further decline.

Player engagement on Steam has also drawn considerable attention, with many comparing Shadows' concurrent user stats to those of recent triple-A single-player titles and prior entries in the Assassin’s Creed series.

Over the weekend, Shadows set a new record as the most-played Assassin’s Creed title on Steam, reaching a peak of 64,825 concurrent players. However, it’s important to note that this is the first game in the franchise to launch with day-one availability on Steam since Odyssey in 2018. For comparison, BioWare’s single-player RPG [Dragon Age: The Veilguard] hit a peak of 89,418 players on the same platform.

Determining whether Shadows is underperforming, meeting, or exceeding expectations remains difficult without specific financial targets, revenue figures, or official sales data from Ubisoft.

Ultimately, revenue will be the key indicator—not only for the future of the game but for the stability of Ubisoft itself. A clearer picture may emerge once Ubisoft releases its next financial report in the coming months.
