The narrative kicks off with protagonist Hazel and her mother preparing for a hurricane. A heated argument leads Hazel to leave their home, only to witness it being swept away by a devastating flood. Driven by the need to find her missing mother, Hazel embarks on a quest that unveils her true heritage, drawing her into a fantastical realm teeming with creatures from Southern folklore.

Lanier shares, "Hazel begins to see fantastical phenomena all over Prospero, including meeting Catfish, an enormous – and talking – creature stuck in a tree following the hurricane’s destruction. Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, someone who possesses magical powers and can see how our threads connect to form the woven tapestry of our fates."
