Early Players Reveal New Blades of Fire Details

Step into the shoes of Aran de Lir, a skilled blacksmith and warrior whose life takes a dramatic turn following a personal tragedy. In his quest for vengeance, Aran discovers a magical hammer that unveils the legendary Forge of the Gods. This sacred place empowers him to craft unparalleled weapons, essential in his battle against Queen Nereia's formidable army. Embark on an epic journey that promises around 60–70 hours of immersive gameplay.

Set in a vibrant yet unforgiving fantasy realm, Blades of Fire dazzles with its enchanting landscapes filled with magical beings such as trolls and elementals. Traverse through lush, enchanted forests and blooming fields, where danger and beauty coexist. The game's visual style is striking, characterized by exaggerated proportions inspired by Blizzard's iconic designs: think colossal limbs, imposing structures, and a grandiose atmosphere. The presence of stocky soldiers reminiscent of Gears of War's Locust adds a distinctive edge to this fantastical setting.

What sets Blades of Fire apart is its innovative weapon modification system and engaging combat mechanics, elevating it above standard action games:

  • Weapon Forging: Start with a basic template and customize it by altering size, shape, material, and other attributes that impact the weapon's performance. The forging process culminates in a mini-game where your precision in controlling strike strength, length, and angle determines the weapon's quality and durability. For ease of use, you can quickly recreate previously forged weapons.
  • Emotional Attachment: The developers aim to foster a deep connection between players and their crafted weapons, encouraging long-term use throughout the journey. Should Aran fall in battle, his weapon remains at the site of defeat, recoverable upon return.
  • Weapon Management: Carry up to four weapon types and seamlessly switch between them. Each weapon features unique stances for varied combat moves like slashing or thrusting.
  • Crafting Over Collecting: Instead of scavenging for weapons, you will create your arsenal from scratch. Choose from seven distinct weapon types, including halberds and dual axes.
  • Combat Dynamics: Engage in strategic combat with directional attacks targeting the face, torso, left, or right. Exploit enemy vulnerabilities—for instance, strike the body if the face is guarded. Confront challenging bosses like trolls, who have additional health bars that only become accessible after severing a limb. Tactics such as disarming or blinding foes add depth to encounters. Manage your stamina carefully, as it's needed for attacks and dodges but only replenishes when you hold the block button.

Despite its rich setting and innovative combat, some reviewers have pointed out that Blades of Fire may struggle with a lack of content, uneven difficulty spikes, and a forging mechanic that can sometimes feel less intuitive. However, the game's unique features and immersive world significantly mitigate these issues.

Blades of Fire is slated for release on May 22, 2025, and will be available on current-gen consoles (PS5, Xbox Series) and PC via the Epic Games Store.
