Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses First Game Project

Jerry Hook, former Halo Infinite design lead, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its inaugural game project. Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to establish Jar of Sparks, described the project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." The studio's recent silence hinted at challenges, now confirmed by their search for a new publishing partner to realize their creative vision.

NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch, including the recent Season 1 Battle Pass announcement and upcoming Fantastic Four content, highlights NetEase's commitment to its live-service portfolio.

Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's ambition to create "something truly new and exciting." While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook mentioned team members exploring new opportunities and the studio's efforts to secure new roles for its employees in the coming weeks. This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a veteran game developer; former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi also formed GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase in 2022.

The Halo franchise, Hook's former domain, has faced recent challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine offer potential for the franchise's revitalization. Meanwhile, Jar of Sparks' temporary pause presents an opportunity for them to secure a publishing partner that aligns with their long-term goals.
