Nintendo’s long-awaited Switch 2 launch has sparked excitement, but the console’s steep costs are stirring unease. While the upgraded hardware promises a beefier version of the beloved Switch, global economic pressures are casting a shadow over its debut.

The U.S.-China trade tensions add another layer of complexity. With the console priced at $450 USD and Mario Kart World hitting shelves at $80 USD, the Switch 2 has become a lightning rod for debates about skyrocketing gaming costs worldwide.

To gauge global reactions, I connected with editors from IGN’s international outlets for insights on the Switch 2’s looming release.

Global Perspectives on the Switch 2

Feedback from IGN editors in Europe, South America, and Asia reveals a divided response. The console’s 120hz refresh rate, HDR, and 4K output earn praise, but the absence of an OLED screen is a glaring disappointment for many.

“IGN Italia’s readers are largely unhappy with the Switch 2,” says editor-in-chief Alessandro Digioia. “Comments across articles and social media highlight frustration over the price, missing OLED display, lack of a trophy system, and a lackluster launch lineup. While third-party titles sparked some interest, fans expected more from Nintendo’s own games.”

IGN Portugal’s Pedro Pestana echoed similar views, noting, “I’m underwhelmed by the Switch 2—it’s a polished Switch 1, but lacks the original’s fresh appeal. That said, Mario Kart World looks impressive, and the games will likely make or break it.”

Some regions are more optimistic. IGN Benelux’s Nick Nijiland reports strong enthusiasm despite the price. “Feedback in our region is overwhelmingly positive. Price gripes exist, but pre-orders sold out in hours. Our Discord exploded with new members when we announced pre-order alerts.”

IGN Turkey’s Ersin Kilic shared upbeat reader reactions. “Comments praise Nintendo for addressing past Switch criticisms. The improved LCD screen is a hit, though many are disappointed the Joy-Con 2 skips Hall Effect tech, which could have curbed drift issues.”

IGN China’s Kamui Ye noted mixed feelings. “The reveal fell flat due to a weak launch lineup and confusing regional pricing,” they said. The absence of new Mario, Zelda, or Animal Crossing titles stung, but loyal fans remain hopeful. “Core fans trust Nintendo’s long-term vision, valuing backward compatibility, magnetic Joy-Cons, and the brand’s knack for evolving platforms with stellar games,” Ye added.

“Nintendo’s diehard fans seem ready to overlook early stumbles, banking on the company’s track record of delivering over time,” Ye concluded.

Console Costs and Tariff Tensions

The Switch 2 is slated to launch at $450 USD in the U.S., but pre-orders remain on hold due to tariff uncertainties under President Trump’s policies. This delay contrasts with other regions where pre-orders are already underway, complicating Nintendo’s June 5 rollout plans.

European IGN editors report minimal tariff concerns in their markets, where pre-orders are moving briskly.

“In Germany, tariffs aren’t a major issue for Switch 2 buyers,” says IGN Germany’s Antonia Dressler. However, the console’s price draws ire. “Readers frequently compare it to the PS5, which they see as a stronger value.” Still, pre-orders are rolling in.

The Switch 2’s pricing pits it against heavyweights like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, toughening consumer choices globally. “In South Africa, Nintendo’s official pre-order price is R12,499,” says IGN Africa’s Zaid Kriel. “It’s not outrageous, but it’s no longer a budget-friendly option compared to PS5 or Xbox. Rising game prices only add to the challenge.”

The Nintendo Switch 2, especially with accessories, comes with a hefty price tag.

“Pricing debates dominated the Switch 2 reveal,” says IGN France’s editor-in-chief Erwan Lafleuriel. “The high costs overshadowed other aspects, partly because leaks left little to surprise. The game lineup is solid but feels incomplete without a standout reveal.”

Outside the U.S., tariffs are hitting harder. IGN Brazil’s Matheus de Lucca warns, “U.S. trade tensions worsen Brazil’s situation. With the Real weak against the dollar, any U.S. price hike could ripple across Latin America, making the Switch 2 unaffordable for many Brazilian gamers.”

In Japan, Nintendo’s region-locked, lower-priced Switch 2 aims to shield the domestic market. “Nintendo capped the price at 50,000 yen, mindful of the weak yen,” says IGN Japan’s Daniel Robson. “Region-locking prevents global imports exploiting Japan’s lower cost. It’s still steep for families, but cheaper than the 77,000 yen PS5. In Nintendo’s home turf, demand will likely stay strong.”

Game Prices Fuel Frustration

While hardware costs and tariffs spark debate, the real sore spot is game pricing. Nintendo’s titles have always held premium value, but the $80 USD tag on Mario Kart World has raised alarms. Though other launch titles range from $70 to as low as $10 USD, the precedent worries fans of even pricier games ahead.

“Game costs are the top grievance among Italian gamers,” says IGN Italy’s Digioia. “Nintendo’s new pricing feels indefensible, especially after the PS5 and Xbox raised AAA prices from €70 to €80. Now, Nintendo’s charging €90 for some titles, stoking anger given their rare discounts. The €9.99 Switch 2 Welcome Tour and paid upgrades for existing games feel like cash grabs to loyal fans.”

“Fans are furious,” IGN Germany’s Dressler says bluntly. “At €90, Mario Kart World sets a new high for German games—outpacing even Assassin’s Creed’s base price. Charging for a tutorial game like Welcome Tour just screams greed.”

Mario Kart World’s $80 price tag draws the most ire, but the $10 Switch 2 Welcome Tour also irks fans.

IGN.com comment threads echo this discontent, with high game prices hitting hard amid rising living costs. In mainland China, where no official release is planned, IGN China’s Ye notes a different angle. “Gray market imports from Japan and Hong Kong offer cheaper games, and social media suggests players find these prices fair. Compared to handheld PCs like Steam Deck, the Switch 2’s value, especially with backward compatibility, resonates with Chinese fans.”

The Switch 2 seems poised for success as a familiar upgrade to a wildly popular console. Yet, its triumph is uncertain. Soaring game prices during economic strain have soured many potential buyers. Tariff-driven delays in the U.S., potential stock shortages, and global trade dynamics add further hurdles. Still, IGN’s global editors confirm Nintendo’s knack for generating buzz—albeit with more skepticism than usual.
