Italian studio 3DClouds has unveiled Formula Legends, an arcade-style open-wheel racing game inspired by Art of Rally that celebrates 50+ years of Formula 1 history with unlicensed tributes.
3DClouds provided IGN with an early preview showing impressive attention to recreating different F1 eras, though elements like AI behavior remain under refinement.
Formula Legends will feature 16 distinct car models, each with seven unique liveries. While stylized in a chunky, toy-like aesthetic, each vehicle clearly pays homage to legendary F1 designs through clever off-brand references. The development team has prioritized authentic sound design - particularly important for capturing the essence of classic F1 engines. The game will also support modding for liveries, helmets, and trackside sponsorships.
The game includes 14 circuits with multiple historical variations spanning from the 1970s to 2020s, all inspired by real-world Formula 1 venues. The story mode promises an engaging journey through F1's greatest milestones across different racing eras.
Racing mechanics will feature surprising depth with 200 unique drivers (including humorously named characters like Mike Shoemaker), each possessing special skills. Additional strategic elements include tire wear, fuel consumption, dynamic racing lines, damage modeling, and variable weather conditions. The challenge lies in balancing these complex systems with accessible arcade gameplay.

Producer Francesco Mantovani revealed the team drew inspiration from 2023's New Star GP but aimed for a more balanced approach between arcade and simulation, citing Art of Rally as their primary influence for camera work and track design.
While 3DClouds' previous work includes licensed children's racing titles like Paw Patrol Grand Prix and Hot Wheels Monster Trucks, Formula Legends represents a passion project developed independently by the studio.
"This is a game our team has dreamed of making for years," explained executive producer Roberta Migliori. "The growing popularity of F1 and our accumulated resources from contract work created the perfect opportunity. Being based near Monza certainly helps fuel our motorsport passion."
Formula Legends launches later this year on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Switch platforms. While Switch 2 development kits aren't currently available, Migliori confirmed the studio will explore next-gen Nintendo support when possible.
