Dark Aladdin Reimagining Unveils Supernatural Horror Twist

A wave of fresh adaptations continues, with a bold new take on the Middle Eastern folktale Aladdin, titled Aladdin: The Monkey’s Paw, set to start filming next month. This is far from the cherished 1992 Disney classic.

Billed as a “grim, supernatural reinterpretation,” this live-action film stars Nick Sagar, Ricky Norwood, Montana Manning, and Bradley Stryker, who also directs and produces from Charley McDougall’s script. The UK serves as both setting and filming location.

According to Deadline, the plot follows “a present-day Londoner, Aladdin, who inherits an ancient monkey’s paw said to fulfill wishes, only to learn each comes with a devastating cost. As the curse claims those around him, he battles a rising evil and the demonic force fueling every granted wish.”

The horror angle feels deeply personal for the creative team. “We aimed to craft horror with a human touch — not just jumpscares, but the emotional toll of desires,” the screenwriter shared. “This tale has lingered with us, and now it’s ready to unsettle audiences. The best horror lingers long after the end. This story is raw, gripping, and steeped in dread. We’re not just making a film — we’re crafting a universe around a legendary idea. While Disney’s 1992 animated gem remains the most iconic adaptation, the folktale has inspired countless films, both animated and live-action, in various languages. The 2019 Disney live-action remake, featuring Smile 2’s Naomi Scott, was the latest to reintroduce the story to modern audiences.
