Following the release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge, Edwards began work on this project, initially titled "The Invincible Iron Man," a nod to the character's comic book origins. He shared title card images, gameplay screenshots, and original Xbox footage showcasing the game's startup and a desert-set tutorial.
Activision's Decision to Cancel
Despite fan enthusiasm, Activision shelved "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. Edwards offered several possible explanations for the cancellation, including delays to the Iron Man film, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or another developer securing the rights.
A Unique Iron Man Design
The game's Iron Man design, predating Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU portrayal by almost five years, closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version. Edwards confirmed this was a design choice by the art team, leaving the reason for this specific aesthetic unclear. He promised further gameplay footage, though it remains unreleased at the time of writing.
