Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has confirmed Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate remains in active development.
The twelfth mainline installment was unveiled during the series' 35th anniversary celebration in 2021, marking the first major release since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Updates have been scarce since then, with Horii previously breaking his silence in February to confirm Square Enix's development team was "working diligently" and promised information would be revealed progressively.
Following months without updates, Horii has once again reassured fans in a recent Gamereactor interview that the project continues moving forward.

"While I cannot share specifics at this time," Horii stated, "development continues with our full effort. I can only promise this next installment will meet expectations - we're working tirelessly. Please maintain your anticipation."
Though falling short of substantive details like trailers or screenshots, Horii's comments should alleviate concerns among fans who feared potential cancellation amidst Square Enix's corporate restructuring and prolonged silence on the project.
The update follows May 2024's confirmation regarding the passing of key Dragon Quest contributors - character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. Series producer Yu Miyake had previously transitioned to oversee Square Enix's mobile division.
