The Witcher 4 will reveal its Unreal Engine 5 capabilities at Epic Games' upcoming State of Unreal 2025 event. Here's what fans can expect from the showcase and insights into CD Projekt Red's development philosophy.
CD Projekt Red announced via Twitter/X that The Witcher 4 will be featured at the State of Unreal event scheduled for June 3 at 9:30 AM ET / 3:30 PM CEST. The presentation will be streamed live on Unreal Engine's official YouTube and Twitch channels.
The Game Awards 2024 gave us our first look at how the fourth Witcher installment will utilize Unreal Engine 5. Now, this State of Unreal presentation will demonstrate the cutting-edge technology powering The Witcher 4 - and potentially future CDPR projects as well.
While fans have only seen a cinematic CGI trailer featuring Ciri as the new protagonist, this showcase might reveal actual in-game visuals or gameplay footage for the first time. CDPR's mention of this technology being used "beyond" suggests UE5 may also power Cyberpunk 2, though this remains unconfirmed.
In CDPR's AnsweRED podcast, co-CEO Adam Badowski discussed the studio's approach to keeping the Witcher franchise fresh. Celebrating The Witcher 3's 10th anniversary, Badowski reflected on their creative philosophy: "We have to add something that changes the consensus. Every game should consist of something new."
This innovative approach contributed to The Witcher 3's success, and will guide development of The Witcher 4. Fans are particularly curious how Ciri's role as protagonist will influence both story and gameplay mechanics.
The Witcher 4 is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, though no release date has been announced yet.
