World of Warcraft has once again celebrated the festive season with the Feast of Winter Veil, its in-game equivalent to Christmas. This year, the event continues to enchant players with special rewards and activities, introducing new collectibles available through random drops, gold, and other in-game means.
In a captivating collaboration with lore expert and content creator PlatinumWoW, World of Warcraft has released a detailed video exploring the rich history and origins of the Feast of Winter Veil. The video delves into the Dwarven myth of Greatfather Winter, a Titan-forged giant whose journey leaves a trail of snow, and the Tauren's spiritual traditions of reflection, renewal, and gratitude to the Earthmother. It also highlights the modern commercial aspect of the holiday, driven by the Goblin-run Smokeywood Pastures, drawing parallels to real-world Christmas festivities.
The lore video wouldn't be complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after Warcraft's executive creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has been kidnapped multiple times—first by pirates and Dark Iron Dwarves in Classic, and later by the Greench in the modern version of World of Warcraft. The video humorously concludes with Metzen the Reindeer expressing gratitude in Thrall's voice, a nod to Chris Metzen's iconic voice acting as the Orc Shaman.
This collaboration with PlatinumWoW is part of a series of successful partnerships World of Warcraft has engaged in. PlatinumWoW has previously created lore breakdowns for Wrath of the Lich King Classic on topics like Nerubians, Vrykul, and the Scourge, as well as content for modern WoW including World Trees and Blackrock Depths. Other notable collaborations include Taliesin & Evitel's guides for returning players in Dragonflight and Hurricane's cinematic trailers for World of Warcraft Classic.
Players have until January 5, 2024, to immerse themselves in the Feast of Winter Veil. This year's highlights include the chance for Hunters to tame the Dreaming Festive Reindeer, and opportunities for all players to acquire new holiday transmogs and the Grunch pet. After their real-life celebrations, fans should log in to check under the virtual tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for their special Winter Veil gift, such as last year’s Junior Timekeeper’s Racing Belt toy.
