Marvel executive James Gunn has set the record straight: Contrary to rumors, the Waller TV series remains in active development. The DC Studios co-chair personally debunked speculation about the project during a recent Threads Q&A session.
When a fan questioned whether reports about Waller being reconceived as a Checkmate series were inaccurate, Gunn responded with a definitive "yes." Another follower sought confirmation: "So Waller is still happening?" to which Gunn again replied with a firm "yes."
This official confirmation comes after Gunn acknowledged previous development hurdles during a February DC Studios press event with co-CEO Peter Safran. "We've experienced some setbacks with Waller," the filmmaker admitted at the time.
Details about the series remain scarce since its initial announcement during the January 2023 DCU slate reveal. Originally conceived as a Peacemaker spinoff, the show was set to explore consequences from the Task Force X leak orchestrated by Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and her daughter Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). However, the 2023 industry strikes necessitated rewrites to align with the revamped DCU timeline, causing substantial delays.
Watchmen writer Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver developed the project, though little additional information has surfaced publicly. Gunn's recent confirmation represents significant progress for the series, which fans can hopefully expect to see in 2025 - if all goes according to plan.
