For newcomers, Uma Musume Pretty Derby is part of a larger multimedia franchise encompassing anime, manga, and more, having gained a significant following thanks to its successful anime series.

Initially released in Japan and Asia in February 2021 for Android and iOS, the game centers around horse girls—racehorses reincarnated as girls in an alternate universe—who strive for idol stardom while competing in the "Twinkle Series," a national sports entertainment event. Characters from the game, like Gold Ship from Team Spica, have already appeared in global releases such as Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, hinting at future crossovers once the English version launches.
