Ubisoft Scraps Assassin's Creed Shadows Early Access, Shuts Down Prince of Persia Team
Ubisoft's recent struggles with game releases continue. The company has announced the cancellation of early access for Assassin's Creed Shadows, and the disbanding of the team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
Assassin's Creed Shadows: No More Early Access
Ubisoft confirmed via a Discord Q&A that early access, previously offered with the Collector's Edition, is no longer happening. This follows the game's delay to February 14, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Furthermore, season passes have been scrapped, and the Collector's Edition price reduced from $280 to $230. The Collector's Edition will still include the artbook, steelbook, figurine, and other promised items. Rumors persist about a potential co-op mode featuring Naoe and Yasuke, but this remains unconfirmed.
Insider Gaming reports that the early access cancellation stems from challenges in ensuring historical accuracy and cultural representation, factors also contributing to the release date delay. Ubisoft Quebec needs additional time to refine the game.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team Dissolved
The team at Ubisoft Montpellier responsible for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been dissolved, despite positive critical reception. According to Origami, this decision is due to the game failing to meet sales expectations. While Ubisoft hasn't revealed specific sales figures, they've expressed disappointment with the game's performance.
Abdelhak Elguess, senior producer, stated that the team is "extremely proud" of their work and that the game's post-launch roadmap is complete, including three free updates and a DLC. Future plans include a Mac release "this winter" and expanding the game's reach to more platforms. Team members have transitioned to other projects within Ubisoft. The company remains committed to the Prince of Persia franchise, hinting at future installments.
