LEGO and Nintendo's creative partnership, formalized several years ago, has produced some of LEGO's most innovative and accessible sets. Initially, in 2020, LEGO clearly distinguished between sets for children and adults. Children were introduced to Super Mario playsets, which combined digital and physical elements to let them build their own Mario courses. Meanwhile, adults were treated to iconic replicas that evoked waves of nostalgia among Gen-X fans.
Over the years, LEGO has intentionally blurred the lines between these two audiences. The newer sets for kids are more complex and engaging, while the adult sets have become more whimsical and cartoonish. This shift aligns perfectly with Nintendo's family-friendly ethos, creating LEGO sets that appeal across generations.

The Mighty Bowser, though technically an expansion playset, is marketed as a standalone set. It reflects LEGO Nintendo's new approach for 2024 and beyond, which no longer strictly separates children's and adult sets.
The early Super Mario playsets for children were very basic and focused on play rather than building. They felt like LEGO sets designed for children who don't enjoy LEGO. Today, LEGO Super Mario sets are more substantial and detailed, even with the barcodes for expansion playsets. Sets like The Mighty Bowser prioritize display and building enjoyment over mobile gameplay, which is where the focus should be. The joy of LEGO comes from the building process, and the final product is a result of that experience.
There's an excellent LEGO documentary on Netflix, part of the "The Toys That Made Us" series, which I recommend to anyone interested. My key takeaway is that LEGO has tried to expand its appeal through various means, but always returns to what people love most about it.
The initial Mario playsets were a step too far in emphasizing play over building. Now, with sets more aligned with LEGO's design strengths, the future looks promising.
