The Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster required five years of dedicated effort to deliver a faithful recreation of the classic games. Discover how the developers approached the project and what lies ahead for the Suikoden series.

Creating the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster spanned five years, driven by the developers' dedication to crafting a high-quality remaster true to the originals. In a March 4, 2025, interview with Dengeki Online, the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster team detailed their meticulous process to ensure authenticity.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned 2023 release, the project faced delays and is now set for launch this year. Takahiro Sakiyama, Suikoden series IP and Game Director, explained that late-stage debugging revealed areas needing refinement, prompting the team to postpone the release to maintain quality.
Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi emphasized a cautious approach, stating, "We focused on assessing the project thoroughly. After discussions with Sakiyama, we identified multiple aspects requiring attention, ensuring we addressed them diligently."

The remaster marks the initial step in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Producer Rui Naito shared the long-term vision, emphasizing the importance of a strong foundation for future projects.
Naito instructed the team, "This remaster is the first move in bringing Suikoden back, so we had to get it right. A solid product was essential." He stressed, "For Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, I urged Sakiyama and the team to create something robust. A weak start could jeopardize the series' revival."

During the Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami announced new projects to expand the Suikoden universe. Naito described the event as the second phase in reviving the IP, though the full scope of the journey remains unclear.
He noted, "We’ve refined Suikoden I & II HD Remaster and are fully committed to the upcoming mobile game Suikoden STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime." Naito added, "Once these projects are successfully delivered, we’ll plan the next steps."
Konami also revealed Suikoden: The Anime, an adaptation of Suikoden 2’s story, produced by Konami Animation in their debut project. Additionally, a mobile game, Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP, was announced. Teaser trailers for both have been released, though no official launch dates are confirmed.
Konami is planning further projects and events to spotlight the Suikoden franchise, aiming to restore its prominence.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars will launch on March 6, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. For the latest updates on Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, explore our article below!
