Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Don't worry, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still crafting this highly anticipated film, and we have a reassuring update from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
The movie remains shrouded in mystery, with one of the few known details being its setting post-The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously outlined the film's timeline. "That's also in the future," she stated in a February interview with Deadline. "It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's rumored that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.
Tropper's words suggest that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need patience, as the movie is not expected until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several projects have been canceled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. In November, another Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, set to feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars films, as confirmed by a recent THR report indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming projects.
Moreover, Disney has more Star Wars content in the pipeline. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to hit your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
