Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has released its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the last significant update for the game. Following the release, BG3 experienced a surge in player numbers, climbing from around 60,000 concurrent players to over 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam’s top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to X on April 22 to comment on the sudden increase in players post-Patch 8. He emphasized that the game's thriving mod support allows the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been reported that Larian Studios will step away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to embark on an entirely new project.
Consequently, D&D's owners, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will carry on the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other studios about the development of a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.
Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly awaited by the community. This final update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and more. Larian Studios provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website. Compared to the November 2024 announcement, the final patch notes feature an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished conclusion to BG3.
Larian Studios has gone above and beyond to enhance BG3, as seen in the numerous fixes and updates included in this final version. Although this is their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community.
