Hori’s Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera, while officially licensed by Nintendo, offers a resolution of just 480p. This is a significant step down from Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera, which boasts a 1080p video capture quality. The UK My Nintendo Store has confirmed these resolutions, highlighting the difference between the two.

Despite its lower resolution, the Piranha Plant camera comes at a more affordable price than Nintendo’s $49.99 camera. It's also worth noting that the Nintendo Switch 2 supports not only the official camera but also any compatible USB-C camera, offering users flexibility in their choice of accessories. Both cameras are set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera does offer some unique features. The part of the camera that houses the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing users to place it directly on top of the Switch 2. This design adds a level of portability that Nintendo’s camera does not have. Additionally, users can close the plant’s mouth to obscure the lens, adding a fun and interactive element to the device.

The revelation that Hori’s Piranha Plant camera is only 480p has caused a stir among Nintendo fans. Social media platforms like Reddit have been buzzing with reactions. User Ramen536Pie questioned, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found humor in the situation, joking, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Another user, pokemonfitness1420, wondered, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"

During last week’s Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the GameChat functionality for the Switch 2, which can be activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other play the same or different titles and even see each other using a camera. The built-in microphone is designed to work reliably across various gaming environments. The C button’s chat menu is intended to be an all-in-one multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most successful online initiative in decades.
