The Minecraft Movie has made a sensational debut at the box office, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the title of the biggest domestic opening for a video game adaptation ever. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, who also lent his voice to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this Xbox game adaptation raked in an impressive $157 million in North America alone. In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which holds the record as the highest-grossing video game adaptation to date, opened with $146 million domestically back in April 2023.

Internationally, A Minecraft Movie added another $144 million to its tally, bringing its global opening weekend total to a staggering $301 million. With a production budget of $150 million, not including marketing costs, the film is already on its way to profitability for Warner Bros.

Based on Mojang's Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time, A Minecraft Movie taps into the enduring popularity of the Microsoft-owned sandbox game. To further engage fans, the movie features tie-in DLC to celebrate its release.

IGN's review of A Minecraft Movie awarded it a 6/10, praising director Jared Hess for infusing the film with a unique and humorous twist on the kid-friendly adventure, especially in its more subdued first half. In other news, Disney's live-action Snow White is facing challenges after a lackluster opening weekend. With global earnings of $168.4 million ($77.5 million domestic and $90.9 million international) against a hefty $250 million production budget, the film may struggle to recover, unlike the surprising success of Mufasa: The Lion King.
