NetEase Games recently laid off US-based developers from its successful Marvel Rivals project, sparking industry discussion. This article explores the details of the layoffs and the upcoming Season 1 update.
Thaddeus Sasser, Marvel Rivals' director, announced on LinkedIn (February 19, 2025) that he and other California-based developers were let go, despite the game's strong performance. Sasser highlighted his team's contributions to the game's success before expressing his commitment to helping his former colleagues find new roles, showcasing their talents on LinkedIn. He specifically praised Garry McGee, the game's technical designer, emphasizing his skills and recommending him highly.
Marvel Rivals involved two teams: one in China and one in Seattle. While Sasser's team focused on game and level design, the layoffs highlight a broader trend. Although NetEase hasn't commented, reports suggest a potential withdrawal from North America. This follows the termination of funding for Worlds Untold (November 2024) and the end of the partnership with Jar of Sparks (January 7, 2025).
The second half of Season 1 brings exciting additions, including new heroes (The Thing and Human Torch, completing the Fantastic Four), a new map (Central Park, featuring Dracula's castle!), and balance adjustments. Lead combat designer Zhiyong detailed changes, such as increased energy costs for quick-recharging ultimate abilities and adjustments to Vanguard character survivability and mobility. A planned rank reset was later removed due to player feedback.
The update, spearheaded by creative director Guangguang and Zhiyong, promises a refreshed competitive landscape. The unexpected layoffs, however, cast a shadow over the game's continued success and raise questions about NetEase's long-term strategy in North America.
