A new Street Fighter movie has announced its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurd comedy show, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will be steering the latest film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom, the game's creator, is said to be "deeply involved" in this project, which is already slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This marks another attempt to bring the beloved video game franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Despite mixed reviews at the time, it remains a cult classic among fans.

While casting details remain under wraps, fans can look forward to seeing iconic Street Fighter characters brought to life once again. Initially, the project had Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou attached, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests that Legendary might be taking the film in a more absurdist and comedic direction, which could be a thrilling twist for fans of the game's more whimsical elements.

In the meantime, gamers can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new fighter Mai Shiranui. For a detailed look at the game, check out our full Street Fighter 6 review here.
