Jon Favreau, a Disney movie veteran, is teaming up with the House of Mouse to bring the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to life in a new Disney+ series. According to a report by Deadline, Favreau will utilize his expertise in both live-action and animation to craft this exciting project. He will take on the roles of writer and producer for the series, though further details such as plot and casting are yet to be disclosed.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit holds a special place in Disney's history. Originally conceived by Walt Disney himself, Oswald starred in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928. However, due to a rights dispute, Universal gained control over the character, leading to a challenging period for Disney but ultimately paving the way for the creation of Mickey Mouse. Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, released its first new original short starring the character in 95 years. With this new series, Disney aims to breathe fresh life into Oswald beyond his historical significance. While a release date for Favreau's project remains under wraps, fans can look forward to a unique blend of live-action and animation in the future.

While Favreau focuses on reviving one of Disney's oldest animated characters, he has also been deeply involved with some of Disney's most recent and successful franchises. Star Wars enthusiasts will recognize him as a key figure in expanding the galaxy far, far away through projects like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. Additionally, Favreau has left a significant mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both behind and in front of the camera, over the last 15 years, including directing the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can anticipate seeing him direct again with The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to hit theaters in 2026.

As Oswald the Lucky Rabbit prepares for his official return to the Disney fold, it's worth noting that the character's most recent cinematic appearance was in the 2023 horror movie, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, which starred Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson. This film came just a year after Oswald entered the public domain, showcasing the character's enduring appeal and versatility across different genres.
