It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 follows suit in an unexpected way. During today's Nintendo Direct, we were thrilled to learn that Koei Tecmo is developing a new installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, titled "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment." This game serves as a prequel to "Tears of the Kingdom" and is set to launch this winter.

Play"Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment" brings back the beloved hack-and-slash action of the Hyrule Warriors series, this time focusing on characters from the ancient history depicted in "Tears of the Kingdom." Players can expect to see familiar faces like Zelda, as well as new characters such as Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game explores Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last of the Zonai, including Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle against Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, featuring Mineru piloting a mech, Zelda wielding magic, Rauru using a striking sword-spear hybrid, and brief appearances of other Sacred Stone wielders.

This marks the third entry in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original "Hyrule Warriors" and "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity," which served as a prequel to "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." "Age of Calamity" was particularly notable for its fresh take on the "Breath of the Wild" storyline, earning a 9/10 from us for being "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish." It will be fascinating to see how "Age of Imprisonment" might deviate from the expected narrative path.
