With the much-anticipated release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the launch platforms accompanying the new release date of May 26, 2026. At the trailer's conclusion, the release date is displayed alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6's initial launch. Notably, Trailer 2 was captured on a PS5, specifically mentioned as such, distinguishing it from the PS5 Pro.
This focus on consoles raises questions about the PC version of the game and potential releases on other platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch 2. Some fans had hoped that the delay to May 2026 might prompt Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, to opt for a simultaneous PC release. However, the absence of any mention of PC in the trailer suggests that a day-and-date launch on PC might not be in the cards, adhering to Rockstar's historical approach to game releases. This strategy, while consistent with past practices, seems increasingly outdated in 2025 and 2026, especially given the growing importance of the PC market for multiplatform game success. Is GTA 6's exclusion from a PC launch a missed opportunity or even a mistake?
IGN posed this question to Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, during a February interview. Zelnick hinted at GTA 6's eventual release on PC, referencing the simultaneous launch of Civilization 7 across multiple platforms. He noted, "With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."
Rockstar's history of delayed PC releases and its complex relationship with the modding community have been points of contention among fans. Despite this, many hoped that a game as monumental as GTA 6 might signal a shift in the studio's approach to PC gaming. While big Rockstar titles do eventually make their way to PC, the timeline remains uncertain. Will PC gamers have to wait until Fall 2027, early 2027, or perhaps even May 2027?
In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to shed light on why GTA 6 would come to PC after its console debut, urging PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding its launch strategy. Zelnick highlighted the significance of the PC market, noting that it can account for up to 40% of a multiplatform game's sales, or even more in certain cases. He remarked, "We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue. Of course, there will be a new console generation."
As for the Nintendo Switch 2, its absence from GTA 6 Trailer 2 was expected, though some had hoped for its inclusion, especially given the upcoming release of Cyberpunk 2077 on the platform. While the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain undisclosed, the fact that GTA 6 is slated for the less powerful Xbox Series S keeps the door open for a potential future release on Nintendo's next-gen console.
