Sucker Punch, the developer of Ghost of Yōtei, recently shared fresh insights during the State of Play on July 10. Directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell detailed how the studio evolved the acclaimed elements of Ghost of Tsushima. In a July 17 discussion with VGC, the directors offered perspective on introducing a new central character for the franchise.

Ghost of Tsushima earned widespread praise for its authentic representation of Japanese culture and its cinematic narrative. It centered on protagonist Jin Sakai's compelling arc of honor and liberation, resonating deeply with players. As the sequel approaches, Sucker Punch acknowledges Tsushima's legacy while transitioning the series into a new era.

Fox commented, "We hold a deep affection for Jin Sakai and dedicated years to bringing his story to life. When we embarked on creating a sequel, our goal was to craft an experience that genuinely excited everyone at Sucker Punch. We believe this passion for developing an origin story allows players to engage with something truly fresh."

Despite their attachment to Jin Sakai, the team wanted to explore new dimensions for the series. Fox added, "So, while we deeply respect Jin Sakai's narrative of sacrificing honor to become the Ghost, we wanted players to discover a new interpretation of the Ghost’s identity in feudal Japan."

Forging Your Own Path: Balancing Freedom and Narrative

Alongside the narrative shift, Sucker Punch concentrated on refining Yōtei's open-world design. The team aimed to provide more exploration possibilities and diverse approaches to experiencing the story. Fox explained, "Those moments when the game doesn't direct you—when you decide where to go and what to do—that’s the core beauty of open-world games."

Nevertheless, they clarified that this freedom doesn't compromise the game's rich, essential storyline. Connell elaborated, "Creating a compelling narrative without structure is incredibly challenging. Atsu's journey involves hunting down the Yotei Six, but we ensure that pursuit is framed within a meaningful story arc. Narrative depth remains a top priority for us."

In a July 17 interview with Game Informer, Connell further detailed the interplay between game structure and story. He remarked, "Developing strong characters with complete arcs—beginnings, middles, and ends—is fundamental. There is a structured narrative progression. At the same time, we aimed to enhance the sense of curiosity and exploratory freedom that defined Ghost of Tsushima."

Drawing Parallels with Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Beyond the open-world and narrative design, fans have noted similarities between Yōtei and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as both titles engage with Japanese history and traditions. Fox told VGC that while Yōtei draws inspiration from history, it does not seek to recreate 1603 Hokkaido with absolute accuracy.

He stated, "Our game is a fictional work. That said, we strive for authenticity and showing deep respect for the cultures represented. Fortunately, as part of Sony, we receive invaluable support and guidance from our colleagues in Tokyo."

Sucker Punch integrated real-world influences into the game, capturing Hokkaido's peril and beauty through on-site visits and research into Ainu culture. "We aim for respectful representation of a community rarely depicted in video games. Our cultural advisors review the game and scripts to ensure our portrayal, while fictional, carries a genuine sense of authenticity."

Meanwhile, Connell expressed enthusiasm about the comparisons in his Game Informer interview. "We welcome these discussions—whether about films or other games. For creators, such parallels are inevitable and something we embrace. Ubisoft creates fantastic titles. Having spent many years in game development, it’s inspiring to see so many compelling projects in this genre. It's exciting for us," he said.

Beyond the Ghost series, fans have inquired about Sucker Punch's other celebrated franchise, inFamous. However, the studio remains fully committed to Yōtei for the present. Fox noted, "I would personally love to revisit Infamous or see a trilogy re-release. However, Sucker Punch concentrates on one project at a time, and our current focus is entirely on completing Ghost of Yōtei."

Following Sucker Punch's recent updates and their statement that this is their most ambitious project to date, anticipation is high for this new chapter. Ghost of Yōtei launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. For the latest updates, explore our article below!
