PlayStation Productions Unveils Multiple Game Adaptations

Featuring Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and More

On January 7, 2025, PlayStation Productions took center stage at CES 2025, announcing a thrilling lineup of game adaptations.

Leading the charge is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, an upcoming anime series set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Directed by Takanobu Mizumo and with story composition by Gen Urobuchi, this series promises to captivate fans. Sony Music will enhance the experience with its music and soundtrack contributions.

Next up, Asad Qizilbash from PlayStation Productions and Ashley Brucks from Screen Gems unveiled films based on Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2. Sony Pictures is set to produce Horizon Zero Dawn, while Columbia Pictures will take the helm for Helldivers 2. Details on these films remain sparse, but excitement is building. Additionally, they teased the upcoming Until Dawn film, scheduled for release on April 25, 2025.

Neil Druckmann then took the stage, briefly discussing Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, before unveiling a new trailer for The Last of Us season two. This season will adapt the storyline from TLOU II, introducing new characters such as Abby and Dina.

PlayStation Productions’ Previously Released Adaptations

Sony's venture into video game adaptations is not new. The journey began with Resident Evil in 2002, starring Mila Jovovich, which led to five successful sequels. Another notable adaptation was Silent Hill in 2006, which, despite mixed fan reactions, performed well at the box office.

In 2019, Sony established PlayStation Productions to focus on adaptations of PlayStation-exclusive games. Their first major hit was the Uncharted film in 2022, starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. This was followed by the Gran Turismo film in 2023, both of which were box office successes.

In 2023, PlayStation Productions also released the Twisted Metal series on Peacock, featuring vehicular combat in a post-apocalyptic world. Though not as critically acclaimed as The Last of Us series, it completed production on its second season in late 2024, with a release date yet to be announced.

Though not highlighted at CES 2025, PlayStation Productions is also developing films based on Days Gone and a sequel to the Uncharted film, as well as a God of War TV series. With this trajectory, it's clear that Sony and PlayStation Productions will continue to explore adaptations of their popular and major video game franchises, driven by fan demand and the potential for success in new media formats.
