In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms will act as a dynamic environmental element, not as controllable tools for players. Unlike the iconic scenes in Frank Herbert's novels where characters summon these massive creatures with thumpers, this feature won't be available in the game.

The developers have designed sandworms as NPCs with predefined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors embedded within the game's engine. Players cannot intentionally summon a sandworm to disrupt an enemy base. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players might draw its attention by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. These actions, however, do not ensure the worm will appear in the desired area.
Riding sandworms, a staple of the Freman culture as portrayed in Herbert's books and the popular Dune films, will not be included in *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have explained that this decision was influenced by pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune cinematic universe.
There's a glimmer of hope for fans of the Freman culture, as future post-launch patches might introduce additional content related to this aspect, possibly including worm-riding mechanics. However, there's no current assurance that players will experience this iconic activity.
*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow at a later date.
