Developers behind The Witcher 4 are alerting players about fraudulent beta test invitations circulating online. Discover CD Projekt Red's official stance on the scam and their rationale for choosing Ciri as the new lead character in the upcoming installment.
CD Projekt Red has issued a public warning regarding counterfeit beta test invitations falsely claiming to be for The Witcher 4. On April 16, the studio addressed these scams through The Witcher's official X (formerly Twitter) account after receiving multiple player reports.
The statement clarified: "We're actively working to remove these fraudulent messages. If you encounter any suspicious invites or claims, please report them immediately using your email or social media platform's reporting tools."
The developer emphasized that all legitimate beta test announcements will exclusively appear on official Witcher channels and websites.

The Witcher 4 made its debut at The Game Awards in December 2024 with a reveal trailer featuring Ciri as the protagonist. This marked a significant departure from the series' tradition, as Geralt had been the central character throughout the previous three games.
In a subsequent VGC interview, Narrative Director Phillipp Weber acknowledged fan reactions to the character switch. While understanding the attachment to Geralt, Weber assured players the development team had thoroughly considered this narrative direction.
"Our challenge—and our commitment—is demonstrating Ciri's potential through compelling storytelling," Weber explained. "This creative decision wasn't made lightly; we've been developing Ciri's protagonist role extensively."

Executive Producer Małgorzata Mitręga thanked fans for their passionate engagement with the announcement. "We value our community's opinions, which stem from genuine love for the series," Mitręga stated. "The final judgment should come when players experience the game themselves."
Positioned as the series' most ambitious entry yet, The Witcher 4 promises new territories to explore and creatures to battle. The game is slated for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, though no concrete release date has been confirmed. For ongoing updates, stay tuned to official announcements.
