Cineverse, which secured U.S. distribution rights for the upcoming third Silent Hill film, confirms Return to Silent Hill will stay true to the original Silent Hill 2 storyline.

"Silent Hill stands among gaming's elite franchises, and Christophe Gans has masterfully recaptured the series' atmospheric essence with Return to Silent Hill," Brandon Hill, Cineverse's executive director of acquisitions, told Variety.

Director Christophe Gans added: "Partnering with Cineverse has been rewarding—they truly understand fan expectations. Return to Silent Hill manifests our profound respect for Konami's masterpiece, Silent Hill 2. We hope longtime fans appreciate what we've crafted."

PlayThe plot will resonate with players of either the classic Silent Hill 2 or Bloober Team's 2024 remake. The story follows James (Jeremy Irvine), a devastated man drawn back to Silent Hill by mysterious correspondence about his lost love (Hannah Emily Anderson). What awaits is a nightmarish version of the town populated by both classic and new horrors. Announced in October 2022, glimpses of Pyramid Head's redesign emerged only in May 2024.

Gans' initial Silent Hill adaptation loosely interpreted the first game's narrative, tracking Rose's haunting search for her daughter Sharon in perpetual winter. Despite boasting a screenplay by Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction writer Roger Avary, our reviewers deemed it middling (5/10):

"Our longstanding apprehension about game adaptations persists. While Silent Hill surpasses its predecessors visually and conceptually, it ultimately delivers more tedium than entertainment—the antithesis of gaming's appeal."

The franchise's second installment, Silent Hill: Revelation (directed by Michael J. Bassett instead of Gans), drew from Silent Hill 3's lore and earned poorer marks (4.5/10):

"This sequel falters comprehensively—neither unsettling nor engaging, potentially extinguishing the film series entirely."

Cineverse plans a comprehensive U.S. theatrical rollout for Return to Silent Hill later this year.
