The newest addition to the extensive LEGO Star Wars collection is the Battle Droid with STAP. This is a substantial and impressive model suitable for play (indicated by its 12+ age rating) or for display (thanks to the included stand and information plaque). Consequently, it's one of those LEGO sets that appeals equally to children and adult fans.

The droid featured is a B1-series battle droid, a common sight throughout the prequel trilogy. These droids have a sleek design, despite their notorious fragility in the face of blaster fire or a lightsaber strike. This LEGO version has a slightly more robust build than its cinematic counterparts, a necessary change as a more screen-accurate, slender design might lack the structural integrity to support its own weight.

This set includes 10 bags of LEGO bricks, a full-color instruction booklet, and a sheet of stickers for decals. The construction begins with the droid's torso, followed by its legs, feet, arms, and head. The hands are a particularly clever design, featuring two fingers and an opposable thumb, all articulated for a firm grip on a blaster or the STAP's handlebars.

Ball joints connect the legs, arms, and feet, providing a wide range of motion for dynamic posing. This articulation is essential for finding a stable center of gravity, allowing the droid to stand confidently in various action stances.

Having built several LEGO action figures with my son, such as Iron Spider-Man and the New Captain America, I find this battle droid superior in its execution. While the limbs are proportionally thicker than in the films, the difference is negligible unless directly compared. Details like the gearing on the knees and the slender rods connecting the forearms to the elbows are excellent touches. It's a visually striking model overall.

Although most of the droid's detailing comes from the interlocking bricks, some pieces require carefully applied decals. As with all sticker sheets, precision is key to avoid a misaligned or amateurish finish.

Once the battle droid is complete, you assemble its E-5 blaster rifle. Next, you build the included minifigure version, which is a perfectly scaled-down replica of the larger model. It looks fantastic.

The final stage involves constructing the STAP speeder and its display stand (STAP is an acronym for Single Trooper Aerial Platform). In Star Wars canon, a STAP is a repulsorcraft utilized by the Trade Federation, most recognizably during the Invasion of Naboo in *The Phantom Menace*.

The STAP build is fairly standard, starting with an internal framework of multicolored bricks that are later concealed by the vehicle's brown outer shell. I appreciate when LEGO sets feature these hidden colorful elements. They not only break the visual monotony of a single-color construction phase but also make it easier to identify parts in the instruction manual.

After the internal structure is finished, you add the uniform brown exterior plates. The finished vehicle has a satisfyingly smooth and curved profile. The STAP features handlebars for the droid to grip and footrests to secure its feet. It's a large and sturdy set with a base wide enough to provide stable support. The final display is genuinely impressive, and I would readily recommend this set to any fan of the Star Wars prequel films.
