Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod adoption following the release of Patch 7. The update, launched on September 5th, unleashed a wave of community creativity, resulting in over a million mod installations within 24 hours, according to Larian CEO Swen Vincke. This number has since skyrocketed, surpassing three million installs according to mod.io founder Scott Reismanis.
Vincke himself highlighted the significant impact of modding on the game, stating that "Modding is pretty big." This enthusiasm is fueled by Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's official Mod Manager, a user-friendly in-game tool simplifying mod browsing, installation, and management.
Patch 7 also delivered substantial new content, including alternative evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and numerous bug fixes and performance improvements. The update's modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower creators to craft custom narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language, offering capabilities such as custom script loading and basic debugging. Mods can be published directly from the toolkit.
Further expanding modding possibilities, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) provides a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted features within Larian's editor. This release demonstrates the community's drive to push the game's creative boundaries, even exceeding initial developer expectations.
Larian Studios is actively pursuing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the considerable challenge of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will be prioritized, with console support following after a period of testing and optimization to manage the complexities of platform-specific submission processes.
Beyond the modding revolution, Patch 7 delivered a refined gaming experience with UI improvements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and significant performance enhancements. With future updates planned, players can anticipate further developments in Larian's cross-platform modding ambitions.
