The Elder Scrolls community is celebrating Bethesda’s gesture after the studio provided complimentary game keys for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to the entire Skyblivion modding team.

In a BlueSky post today, the Skyblivion team expressed gratitude for Bethesda’s support. “As passionate fans, we’re incredibly thankful for the generous gift of Oblivion Remastered keys for our whole team! This means the world to us. Thank you, Bethesda!”
Skyblivion is an ambitious fan-driven remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, crafted by the TESRenewal volunteer group. Built using Bethesda’s Creation Engine, it reimagines Oblivion within Skyrim’s framework. The project, over a decade in development, evolved from a straightforward port to a comprehensive overhaul with enhanced features and new content. We spoke with one of its developers back in 2021. Skyblivion is slated for release this year.
Bethesda and the Skyblivion team have long enjoyed a positive relationship, but as speculation about an official Oblivion remaster grew, some fans wondered if Bethesda’s version was meant to overshadow Skyblivion due to the similar release timing. Addressing these concerns before today’s reveal, the Skyblivion team stated that Bethesda has “consistently supported community efforts like ours” and emphasized that “there’s no need for rivalry or comparisons” between the two projects.
Notably, Oblivion Remastered lacks official mod support, though fans have already created numerous unofficial mods shortly after its launch. Both versions of Oblivion offer distinct experiences: Skyblivion is exclusive to PC, while Oblivion Remastered includes the horse armor DLC for Deluxe Edition buyers but lacks the new content promised by Skyblivion. Each version has a unique aesthetic and approach to blending Skyrim’s elements into Oblivion’s world. While Oblivion Remastered is available now, Skyblivion’s release is still on the horizon.
In the meantime, explore why some players view today’s release as more of a remake than a remaster and the reasoning behind Bethesda’s choice to label it “Remastered.”
