Atari's Infogrames Label Acquires Surgeon Simulator Franchise
Atari, through its revived Infogrames label, has announced the acquisition of the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild Inc., the game's publisher. Infogrames, a label designed to manage titles outside Atari's core portfolio, marks a resurgence for a brand synonymous with game development and distribution in the 80s and 90s. This acquisition reflects Atari's recent aggressive acquisition strategy, building on its earlier purchase of Totally Reliable Delivery Service in April 2024.
Infogrames plans to expand the Surgeon Simulator franchise through enhanced digital and physical distribution, along with the development of new installments and collections. The label's history includes iconic titles like Alone in the Dark (1992), the Backyard Baseball and Putt-Putt series, and Sonic Advance games.
Geoffroy Châteauvieux, Infogrames Manager, highlighted the enduring popularity and unique appeal of Surgeon Simulator, calling the acquisition a "rare opportunity." The quirky surgical simulator, originally released in 2013, has since seen ports to iOS, Android, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, along with a VR version. A sequel, Surgeon Simulator 2, launched in 2020 (PC) and 2021 (Xbox). While a third installment hasn't been announced, Atari is clearly banking on the franchise's continued success. The acquisition also includes the IP rights to Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread, previously acquired by tinyBuild from Bossa Studios in 2022. Bossa Studios, the original developer, underwent staff reductions in late 2023, potentially impacting further development plans before the IP transfer.
