Arctic Hazard unveils Norse, a new strategy game reminiscent of XCOM, but set against the backdrop of Viking-era Norway. This historically-rich title promises a compelling narrative crafted by award-winning author Giles Kristian, whose work has sold over a million copies.
The gaming landscape is replete with medieval fantasy settings. Fans of European medieval games with survival elements might enjoy titles like Manor Lords and Medieval Dynasty. Imperator: Rome offers a different perspective, allowing players to lead the Roman Empire. However, Vikings consistently feature prominently in gaming, and Norse offers a fresh take.
Norse is a turn-based strategy game, similar in style to XCOM, but with a Viking twist. Players follow Gunnar, a young warrior on a quest for vengeance against Steinarr Far-Spear, the murderer of his father and fellow countrymen. Gunnar must build his settlement, gather allies, and forge a powerful Viking army. Unlike the more open-ended Valheim, Norse prioritizes a story-driven experience.
To maintain historical accuracy and narrative depth, Arctic Hazard partnered with Giles Kristian, a Sunday Times best-selling author known for his Viking-themed novels. The game's trailer showcases a commitment to authentically depicting Norway.
Further gameplay details are available on Arctic Hazard's website. Players manage a village, overseeing the production and upgrade of Viking warrior equipment. Each unit features customization options and distinct classes, including Berserkers (frenzied melee combatants) and Bogmathr (long-range archers).
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, Norse will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While a release date remains unannounced, players can add Norse to their Steam wishlist.
