Stellar Blade: 2025 PC Release Confirmed, PSN Linking Remains Uncertain
Initially a PlayStation exclusive, Stellar Blade is officially coming to PC in 2025! This announcement follows earlier speculation and confirms SHIFT UP's plans for expanding the game's reach. Read on for details about the PC release and a potential PSN requirement.
SHIFT UP Confirms PC Release, Cites PC Gaming Growth
The developer confirmed the PC release in response to investor questions regarding platform expansion. SHIFT UP cited the booming PC gaming market, referencing the success of titles like Black Myth: Wukong, as a key factor in their decision. While a specific release date isn't set, SHIFT UP plans to maintain the game's popularity until the PC launch. This includes the upcoming Nier: Automata collaboration DLC and Photo Mode, both releasing November 20th, along with continued marketing efforts.
PSN Linking: A Potential Hurdle for PC Players
Stellar Blade's PC release joins a growing trend of PlayStation exclusives migrating to PC. However, this trend has also introduced a controversial practice: requiring PSN account linking. As a Sony-published title and with SHIFT UP's second-party status, this is a strong possibility for Stellar Blade. This would unfortunately exclude players in regions without PSN access from playing the PC version.
Sony's stated rationale for this requirement is to ensure secure gameplay for live-service titles. This raises questions about its application to single-player games.
The need for a PSN account remains unclear for Stellar Blade's PC release. Given SHIFT UP's IP ownership, it's possible this requirement might not be enforced. However, a mandatory PSN link could significantly impact PC sales, potentially hindering SHIFT UP's goal of exceeding console sales.
