Firaxis Games announces a virtual reality adaptation of the recently released Civilization VII.
Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR marks the franchise's first foray into VR, launching Spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. Developed by PlaySide Studios (known for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds), the VR title promises a unique experience.
Here's the official description:
Civilization VII - VR brings the world of Civilization to life in unprecedented ways. The game world unfolds on a Command Table, allowing players to zoom in for intricate details or zoom out for a strategic overview, mimicking a tangible tabletop experience. Players interact directly with iconic world leaders, witnessing their reactions to alliances and declarations of war throughout history.
Offering both immersive VR and mixed reality modes (seamlessly switchable), the VR experience places players in an elegant museum overlooking a leader-specific vista. In mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to the player's physical space. The Archives, a dedicated museum room, showcases gameplay achievements in both VR and mixed reality formats. Beyond single-player, online multiplayer for up to four Meta Quest 3/3S players allows for competitive global domination.
The PC and console versions of Civilization VII (currently available via early access) have received mixed player feedback on Steam, citing UI issues, limited map variety, and missing features.
Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback, pledging improvements to the UI, the addition of cooperative teams to multiplayer, and expanded map types, amongst other enhancements.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, addressed the negative reviews, expressing confidence that the core Civilization fanbase will embrace the game with continued play, and describing its initial performance as “very encouraging.”
