Sustaining Waystones in Path of Exile 2: A Comprehensive Guide

One of the biggest hurdles in Path of Exile 2's endgame is maintaining a steady supply of Waystones for mapping. Running dry feels incredibly frustrating, especially at higher tiers. Fortunately, several strategies can significantly improve your Waystone acquisition. This guide outlines key steps to ensure a consistent flow of Waystones.

1. Prioritize Boss Maps on the Atlas

Atlas Boss Map Node

The most effective method for obtaining Waystones is focusing on Boss map nodes. Bosses have a considerably higher Waystone drop rate. If you're low on high-tier maps, use lower-tier maps to reach Boss nodes, reserving your higher-tier maps for the boss encounter itself. Defeating a boss often yields a Waystone of equal or higher tier, sometimes even multiple Waystones.

2. Invest Currency in Waystone Upgrades

Currency Investment

While hoarding Regal and Exalted Orbs is tempting, strategically spending them on Waystone upgrades is crucial. Consider Waystones an investment; increased investment yields greater returns (provided you survive). This creates a positive feedback loop, but only if you consistently reinvest. Here's a currency allocation strategy:

  • Tier 1-5 Waystones: Upgrade to Magic items (Orb of Augmentation, Orb of Transmutation).
  • Tier 6-10 Waystones: Upgrade to Rare items (Regal Orb).
  • Tier 11-16 Waystones: Utilize all available upgrades (Regal Orb, Exalted Orb, Vaal Orb, Delirium Instills).

Prioritize Waystone drop chance (aim for over 200%) and increased item rarity. Also, focus on increasing monster quantity, especially rare monsters. List items for Regal Orbs instead of Exalted Orbs if they aren't selling quickly; they'll sell faster, providing usable currency.

3. Utilize Atlas Skill Tree Nodes

Atlas Skill Tree Nodes

As you progress and complete Doryani's quest, strategically allocate Atlas skill tree points. These three nodes are highly recommended:

  • Constant Crossroads: 20% increased quantity of Waystones.
  • Fortunate Path: 100% increased rarity of Waystones.
  • The High Road: 20% chance for Waystones to be a higher tier.

These nodes are typically accessible by Tier 4 maps. Respeccing is worthwhile if necessary; Waystones are far more valuable than the cost of respeccing.

4. Optimize Your Build Before Tier 5+ Maps

Optimized Build

Insufficient build optimization is a common cause of Waystone depletion. Dying frequently negates any gains from increased drop rates. Consult a build guide and respec if needed. Endgame mapping demands a different build than the campaign.

5. Leverage Precursor Tablets

Precursor Tablets

Precursor Tablets enhance monster rarity and quantity, along with other map modifiers. Stack their effects by using them on nearby towers. Don't hoard them; use them even on T5+ maps.

6. Buy Waystones on the Trade Site (If Necessary)

Trade Site

Despite employing these strategies, you might occasionally run low on Waystones. Purchasing them from the trade site is a viable option. Waystones typically cost around 1 Exalted Orb, with lower-tier Waystones sometimes available for less. Use the in-game trade channel (/trade 1) for bulk purchases.
