Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio Fuels AAA Game Speculation

A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, has been confirmed via a recent job posting. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio and is dedicated to developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5.

The secrecy surrounding this studio has ignited considerable speculation. Industry insiders point to two potential origins: a Bungie spin-off team or a group led by Jason Blundell, former co-founder of the defunct Deviation Games.

PlayStation's first-party studios enjoy a stellar reputation, making any new project highly anticipated. The addition of this unannounced studio further expands Sony's impressive portfolio, joining established giants like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Recent acquisitions, such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite, demonstrate Sony's commitment to bolstering its first-party development capabilities.

The Los Angeles studio's "groundbreaking" AAA IP is currently shrouded in mystery. The revelation came via a job listing for a Project Senior Producer, explicitly mentioning the newly formed AAA studio.

One theory suggests the studio incorporates a team spun off from Bungie following layoffs in July 2024. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, potentially forming the core of this new venture.

Another compelling possibility involves Jason Blundell's team. A veteran Call of Duty developer, Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title before its closure in March 2024. Following Deviation Games' demise, many former employees joined PlayStation under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer timeframe of Blundell's team's formation, it's considered a strong contender for the new studio's identity.

The nature of Blundell's team's project remains unknown, but speculation points to a continuation or revival of Deviation Games' abandoned AAA title. While an official announcement from Sony is likely years away, the existence of this new studio provides fans with exciting prospects for future PlayStation releases.
