Nintendo has once again revised its hardware sales forecast downward, as the sales of the Nintendo Switch and its games have fallen "below expectations." For the first nine months of the current financial year, revenue from Nintendo's dedicated game console business dropped by 31.7% year-on-year, reaching 895.5 billion yen (approximately $5.7 billion). This decline is largely due to reduced sales of both the Nintendo Switch hardware and its software.

Similarly, income from mobile and intellectual property (IP) related ventures decreased by 33.9% year-on-year to 49.7 billion yen (approximately $320 million). This drop is attributed to the challenging comparison with the previous year's success of the blockbuster film, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." As a result of these declines, Nintendo's gross profit fell by 27.3% year-on-year to 565.5 billion yen (approximately $3.6 billion).

What's the Best Nintendo Switch Game?

With the vast library of games available for the Nintendo Switch, picking a favorite can be tough. Some of the standout titles include:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom - Sold 3.91 million units in its first three months.
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree - A massive hit with 6.17 million units sold in the same period, outperforming previous Mario Party games on the Switch.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Continues to be a fan favorite with 5.38 million units sold.
  • Nintendo Switch Sports - Attracted 2.63 million players.
  • Mario & Luigi: Brothership - Sold 1.4 million units.

Each of these games offers unique gameplay and has contributed significantly to the Switch's ongoing success.

Nintendo has now adjusted its financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2025 for the second consecutive time. The company now expects to sell fewer Nintendo Switch units than previously anticipated, lowering its forecast by 1.5 million to 11 million units. Additionally, software sales projections have been reduced by 10 million to 150 million units.

Given that the Nintendo Switch is now in its eighth year, some decline in sales is expected, though the extent of this decline has surprised Nintendo. Despite this, the Switch has achieved remarkable success, selling over 150 million units. While surpassing the sales of Sony's PlayStation 2 (160 million units) to become the best-selling console of all time may be out of reach, the Switch is close to overtaking the Nintendo DS' 154 million units.

Nintendo described the sales performance of the Switch and its software in the third quarter ending December 31, 2024, as "stable given the fact that the platform is in its eighth year." Overall, sales of the entire Nintendo Switch family of systems decreased by 30.6% year-on-year, totaling 9.54 million units. Software sales fell by 24.4% year-on-year to 123.98 million units. However, new releases such as The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership have performed well.

Super Mario Party Jamboree has been particularly successful, surpassing the sales pace of previous Mario Party titles for the Nintendo Switch within the first 11 weeks of its release on October 17, 2024.

Importantly, as Nintendo gears up for the launch of the Switch 2 later this year, more people are playing the Switch than ever before, with 129 million ‘annual playing users’ in 2024. This indicates continued strong engagement with the console despite its age.

"Nintendo Switch unit sales declined year-on-year, but even in the eighth year since its launch in March 2017, Nintendo Switch continues to attract the interest of consumers, and sales in some weeks during the holiday season exceeded same-week sales of the previous year," Nintendo stated.
